Did you know the rules have changed for teen drivers in the State of Hawaii?

The City and County of Honolulu requires all driver license applicants who are under the age of 18 years old to present an:

  • Instruction Permit held for a period of at least 180 days
  • Driver Education Student Completion Certificate (Form HDOT DE-20, 12-2000)
  • Behind-the-Wheel Student Completion Certificate (Form HDOT DE-21, 12-2000)

Gomes Drivers Ed School can help you attain the necessary certificates required for all driver license applicants. We provide both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training for all ages. Our instructors are certified by the State of Hawaii and provide a safe and effective learning environment.

Our comfortable classroom provides a great setting for driver's education classes. Behind-the Wheel training in our new specially equipped vehicle is scheduled based upon availability.

1. What are the requirements for driver's license?

2. What's the minimum age to get a permit?

The minimum age remains at 15 ½ years of age.

3. When can a teenager get a driver's license?

  • A Provisional License may be issued at 16 years of age.
  • A Driver License may be issued at 17 years of age.
  • Applicants between the ages of 15 ½ through 17 years of age must possess a valid Hawaii Instruction Permit for a period of 180 days, and, while operating a motor vehicle be seated next to a person who is at least 21 years of age and licensed to operate the same type of motor vehicle.
  • However, between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., the supervising parent or guardian must be seated next to the minor driver. Applicants must not have any pending violations that may result in suspension or revocation of either the Instruction Permit or Provisional License.
  • To obtain a Driver License at 17 years of age, you must have held a Provisional License for a period of six months.

4. Is parent/guardian participation required?

Yes, We provide 30 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction however, state DOT requires an additional 40 hours of daylight and 10 hours of night practice with a licensed driver over the age of 21 years old. That's where the parent/guardian participation is required. Upon completion, the Day/Night Time Driving Log & Acknowledgment Form must to be notarized and returned to the driving instructor.

5. How much does it cost?

Classroom & Behind-the-Wheel is $500.00.

Books & Supplies (Includes How to Drive Textbook, How to Driver Workbook, Notebook, Pen and Pencil) is $45.00.

6 hours of Behind-the-Wheel only is $325.00.

About Us

Gomes Driving School was started in the summer of 2014 to serve the Honolulu, Windward (Kaneohe, Kailua, Waimanalo), and North Shore (Kakuku, Laie, Hauula, Punaluu, Kahaluu) communities on the Island of Oahu. With over 50 years of service to our Keiki, the Gomes family is expanding this legacy by providing both intensive classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training for all ages. Lee Gomes, Driving Instructor

Starting out her career as a bus driver in 1972, she then moved into a co-existing office position. Within a few short months she then took over office management in January of 1974. As the Office Manager, Lee transformed a Mom & Pop bus service into a modern, full-staffed, functioning organization providing quality transportation to our clients. Together with David, her husband, Gomes School Bus Service, Ltd. had over 90 employees. All the while she fills in as a substitute driver, substitute aide, driver trainer, DPI instructor, dispatcher, financial advisor, bookkeeper, receptionist, and all around person.

Lee has been active with the Hawaii School Bus Association for 35 years, 16 of those years as either the Secretary or Vice President and for the last 14 years the President. She has been active at the Legislature, giving support for the betterment of the school bus industry. She participated in the 14th National Conference on School Transportation in May of 2005 as a delegate of the State of Hawaii. Lee carries a Class A CLD with all endorsements that allows her to drive any vehicle.
